Every year WGS South offers a number of awards to support women’s, gender, and sexuality studies scholarship and programming in the South
STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS
Application Deadline: January 31, 2025
WGS South is pleased to announce Student Travel Grants for travel to the WGS-South Annual Conference.
Students applying for a travel grant must present at the WGS-South conference and attend the conference business lunch to receive their award.
Both undergraduate and graduate students who attend college/university within the WGS-South membership region are eligible and encouraged to apply. Up to ten travel grants will be awarded, with priority given to students at institutions with WGS-South institutional memberships.
The application will consist of the following:
Please submit a brief statement (including your paper/project title) explaining your interest in attending the 2025 WGS South Conference in Atlanta. Beyond your presentation focus, what are you hoping to learn? What conversations are you hoping to have? What communities are you hoping to connect with? (please no more than 250 words).
Please complete the form below and submit application to WGS-South at sewsaorg@gmail.com no later than 11:59 pm on January 31, 2025.
Winners will be notified on Feb 7th via email.
Past Awards
INSTITUTIONAL MINI-GRANTS
Application Deadline: February 15, 2023
Institutional members may apply for mini-grants to support activities that further the mission of their program and WGS South. Special consideration will be given to events with speakers/scholars from the region.
Awards up to $500 will be made. Award-winning events will be featured on the WGS South website. WGS South is to be credited as a sponsor of the event. A statement that acknowledges that the WGS South has sponsored or co-sponsored the event should appear on all promotional material.
The application will consist of the following:
Formal request to Dr. Hil Malatino, WGS South President
One-page description of the event stating needs for funding and how WGS South will be acknowledged
When an institution is awarded a grant, a copy of relevant publicity should be submitted to the WGS South Secretary for WGS South's archives.
Applications should be submitted via email to Dr. Hil Malatino, President, at HMalatino@psu.edu by February 15, 2023. Selected recipients will be notified by March 1, 2023.
Alison Piepmeier Outstanding Student Award Application Deadline: February 15, 2023
Dr. Allison Piepmeier served as SEWSA (now WGS South) President from 2006-2008 with dedication and excellence. She has been a role model for the presidents who have followed in her path; a loyal and generous colleague in both SEWSA and NWSA contexts; a fierce feminist, promoter of the field, and public intellectual; and a dedicated mentor. This award was created in gratitude and in honor of her memory. It is designed to assist undergraduate students who are members of WGS South with their research and professional development or relevant activist or campus-community work.
The award is $500 and can be used for professional travel, books, supplies, and/or equipment. This grant originated in 2016 and will be awarded every other year. Students may apply themselves or be nominated by an instructor or mentor.
Application deadline: February 15, 2023
This award is designed to assist students who are members of WGS South with research and professional development. Research should be consistent with the research mission of WGS South to foster scholarship on and activism in eliminating oppression and discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, race, age, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic background, physical ability, and class. The award can be used for travel, books, supplies, and/or equipment. This grant began in 2011 and is awarded every other year.
Eligible applicants:
Must be pursuing a [B.A., M.A. and/or Ph.D.] at a university in the WGS South region and be in good standing with their program.
Must be current WGS South members and have been members for a minimum of two years.
Preference will be given to students who are active in WGS South.
The application will consist of the following:
A two-page proposal that addresses:
Aim and purpose of the research
Methodology
Significance of the research to the research mission of WGS South
An itemized budget of expenses to be covered by the award
A one-page curriculum vita/resume
